Get Your Kick On Route Sixty Six
The Song, Towns and Signs of The Mother Road
Bobby Troup's mini-travelogue of America’s most
famous and beloved all-American highway encouraged us to "get
your kicks on route 66" and helped to immortalize this
legendary stretch of road.
Troup had us visiting towns along main street
America like St. Louie, Joplin, Oklahoma City, Amarillo,
Gallup, Flagstaff, Kingman, Winona, Barstow and San
Bernardino.
In 1946, Troup's "Route Sixty Six" song became
an instant hit in the US on both the R&B and pop charts
for Nat King Cole.
In the sixty years since, Route Sixty Six has
become a pop standard and has been covered by over 200
different artists including rockers the Rolling Stones, jazz
vocal group the Manhattan Transfer and country singer Brad
Paisley. Most recently, the cast of the movie “RV” starring
Robin Williams recorded a version for the movie
soundtrack.
Ironically, the 1960's television show Route
Sixty Six only shot 4 episodes on the actual route 66 highway
and chose not to use Bobby Troup's song. Instead they had a
new theme song commissioned in order to avoid paying song
royalties to Troup.
However, in 2006 Route Sixty Six was the
featured song in Pixar's film “Cars” including two versions,
one by Chuck Berry plus a more modern rendition by
contemporary rock artist John Mayer.
Historic Route Sixty Six, The Mother
Road Still Maintains Her Mystique

For almost forty years US highway route 66 was
the main 2-lane arterial route across America, stretching over
2400 miles through eight states and across three time zones.
Our affection for America's legendary and most
famous highway is perhaps a reflection of our romance with the
freedom of road travel in America. Remembered in song, film,
books and in the hearts of millions, old route sixty six shows
no signs of losing her charm or
mystique.
